Since the introduction of the Mercury in 1939, it's identity has been intertwined with the Ford automobile. Mercurys were considered to be Fords with longer wheel bases, larger engines and richer appointments. Even today, many models of the Ford and Mercury line are virtually the same car aside from for their different names.

For 1946, Mercury customers were offered essentially restyled 1942 models. During the war when the Ford Motor Company was planning their post WWII lineup of cars, they envisioned the 1949 lineup to consist of six car lines, a small Ford, a big Ford, a small Mercury, a big Mercury, a standard Lincoln (Zephyr) and the Continental. Henry Ford II took over leadership of Ford and saw no need for 6 car lines.

The Mercury is truly a symbol of the 50's. In the 1955 movie "Rebel Without A Cause," actor James Dean drove a mildly customized '49 Mercury Coupe. The Merc was nosed, decked (The work rumored to have been done by George Barris) and lowered with duel exhaust. Contrary to what some so called "Experts" say, the James Dean Merc was not chopped! "Rebel Without A Cause" premiered at New York's Aster Theater in October of 1955, one month after James Dean's death. He would never know the extraordinary impact he made with this movie. Few automobiles have developed such a "Cult" following as the James Dean Mercury, one of the most famous movie cars in history.
